The Ambition

The purpose of this website is to serve as a repository of knowledge for matters relating to the treatment of ulcerative colitis. The primary focus is on dietary interventions that could help to extend remission or reduce the severity of flares, although a brief overview of licensed medical treatments and alternatives are also provided. Importantly, facts will not simply be asserted. The author intends to provide links to scientific papers for every opinion that is given and also to assess the strength of the scientific evidence in each case. Over time, the author hopes that this website will become a trusted source of advice for the latest evidence on dietary and other treatments for ulcerative colitis.

Why is this necessary?

There is a plethora of advice on the web about how to manage ulcerative colitis through dietary intervention. The problem is that this advice is rarely based on scientific evidence and is often contradictory. For example, some diets recommend the total exclusion of dairy products, whilst others laud the importance of consuming raw milk. Which is correct, if either? What does the evidence support? This site seeks to answer those questions, or, if there is no evidence either way, make this clear.

In many cases, the truth is that the quality of evidence is often poor and inconsistent (if it exists at all) and the best approach is likely to be nuanced. Unfortunately, there is no miraculous food that will cure ulcerative colitis. If there was, it would have been discovered long ago and become the standard of care, as a gluten-free diet has become for Coeliac Disease. Ulcerative colitis is a far more complex disease than Coeliac Disease, so the optimal diet that may help to control symptoms and extend remission is also likely to be complex, and is likely to vary from person to person. This website will help you to navigate these complexities and provide you with independent, scientifically-backed advice that you can use to make positive changes to your diet. The author also hopes that you find the pages on medicines and evidence-backed alternatives to be useful and informative.
